Who Should Tell when I move House ?
Moving House
When you move house there are various people you must inform and potential penalties for not doing so. Hence the first recommendation we have, is to set up a postal redirection for a period of time, to stop correspondence going astray. Supplying contact details to the new residents in your old property can also be a good idea e.g. for parcels.
Friends & Family
They may only want to send you stuff occasionally but do make sure they have the correct postal address and postcode – and new telephone numbers too if applicable – especially if these details are on any of their emergency contract lists.
Employers, Schools etc
You should also update details with your employers – their emergency contact lists and tax documents etc. Also schools, doctor & dentist, sports clubs, or volunteer organisations – again emergency contact lists as well as membership.
Utility Suppliers
Hopefully, you have read all your meters in both the old and new properties and sorted out bills and new providers. But do make sure all these bills come to you, so they can be settled. Also telephone and internet bills.
To check your bank account etc for standing orders and direct debits, to cancel the old ones is also a good idea.
Legal Documents
It is compulsory to have your correct address on your Driving Licence so you may have to apply for a new one. What about other licences or passes e.g. shot gun licence, or bus pass.
Financial institutions
Tell all your banks and credit cards etc – often this can be done online. Also accountants, solicitors, stock brokers, etc., and anyone you have investments or loans with e.g. Shares, premium bonds, store cards etc. Remember some such statements only come annually e.g. pension statement, or insurance renewal – so do not forget these.
HMRC
You can change your address via your government gateway although changes may filter through from employers. It is a good idea to check so you do not miss any demands and hence get penalties.

Address Changes for your company.
When you move house, your company may or may not move too but the registration details for yourself will.
Companies House
You need to tell Companies House of any changes to registered office address; Directors addresses or addresses of persons of significant control.
You can do this online via webfiling, or using paper forms (unless you have elected not to allow paper updates)
- The registered office is the legal address for the company and must be in the relevant jurisdiction e.g. “England & Wales.”
- Private residential address must be supplied for all individuals but need not be on public record.
- Service address is the address on the public record for an individual.
Please note Companies House have the option to link addresses e.g. service address to registered office so double check the changes you are making.
HMRC
You can change your company addresses via your company government gateway.
- Corporation Tax – registered office changes should come from Companies House but may not, so it is a good idea to check.
- VAT – trading address is what should be registered so may need changing.
- PAYE – HMRC may hold two addresses for payroll, the compulsory company address (officially where wages are paid) and an optional alternative correspondence address (which may be the company, or their accountants or bookkeepers)
Employees address changes, e.g. for yourself as Director, are notified via payroll submissions so do tell whoever is doing these.
Financial institutions
Tell all your banks and credit cards etc – often this can be done online. Also accountants, solicitors, stock brokers, etc., and anyone you have investments or loans with.
Legal Documents
You should make sure letterhead e.g. invoices and e-mails, have the new details. Also any registration or licences e.g. Data protection.
Customers & Suppliers etc.
You need to ensure you receive correspondence, so update contact details – on websites, google, yellow pages etc.
You may also want to contact any regular suppliers or customers to ensure they are aware of the change, for correspondence or deliveries etc.
